India made an astounding Rs 5.9 trillion in business, fueled by an estimated 4.8 million weddings across the country. Delhi alone saw an astounding 4,50,000 weddings. However, with the grand weddings, comes the case of divorces, harassment and unwanted problems in marriages.
So, it is very crucial to do the background check of the prospective bride and groom. That is what Bhavna Paliwal, a matrimonial detective is doing from an anonymous office in a mall in New Delhi.
Instead of calling the priest, getting married and throwing a party, brides and grooms are now choosing to do a thorough check of their prospective partner. And that’s when Paliwal’s detective agency enters.
“When my daughter said she’s in love, I wanted to support her – but not without proper checks. So, I immediately hired Paliwal,” said Sheela, an office worker, who had a bad marriage.
Similarly, a man had quoted he was earning around $70,000. However, the detective agency found out that he was only making $7000. Many even hire Paliwal who runs the Tejas Detective Agency, to spy on their spouses to confirm a suspected affair.
This way, Paliwal has saved several marriages and also helped many know the truth of their respective partners.
“There are many who want to know if the groom is straight or gay,” Paliwal quipped. In the past, such premarital checks were often done by family members, priests or professional matchmakers. However, things have gone to a different level now.
“It is a service to society,” Paliwal maintains, who has been in this business since the last two decades.
