This rare wood comes from a small, multi-stemmed tree that grows up to 25 feet tall. As the African blackwood trees are small in size, they produce boles not larger than a foot in diameter. Large pieces of African blackwood are scarce and highly expensive. Moreover, this tree grows slowly and can take up to 40-60 years to mature enough to be harvested. For its rarity and slow growth, it is one of the most expensive timber.
Where is it Found?
African Blackwood is found only in 26 countries. However, their origin is in the central and southern parts of the African continent. These trees are abundantly found in the region and the height of these trees ranges from 25-40 feet. African blackwood trees are mostly found only in drought-prone areas of Africa.
Price
Reportedly, the price of African blackwood can reach up to Rs 7 lakh per kg. However, depending on the quality and demand, the price can vary. Due to its expensive price, African blackwood is smuggled into countries like Kenya and Tanzania. According to reports, smugglers cut these trees overnight.
Use
Though expensive, the demand for African Blackwood isn't affected. Apart from high-end furniture, clarinet, flute, and several other luxury items are made from its timber.
