In a landmark geological breakthrough, scientists have confirmed the presence of significant gold reserves deep beneath the surface in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, potentially placing the region among India’s most mineral-rich zones.
The discovery comes after years of exploration in the Mahangwa Kewalri area of Sihora tehsil, an already mineral-rich belt known for iron and manganese.
Gold Deposits Beneath Jabalpur Spread Across 100 Hectares!
According to preliminary survey data, the gold deposits are spread across an estimated 100 hectares. Experts believe the reserves could run into lakhs of tonnes, making this one of the largest potential gold finds in central India.
If social media buzz is anything to go by, over 3.35 lakh tonnes of gold deposits have been found.
According to a report by News 18 (Telugu), a senior official from the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources said, “This is a conclusive finding. Our chemical analysis confirms substantial traces of gold, along with copper and other precious minerals. This discovery has the potential to change the economic profile of the region.”
The survey, conducted by the department’s Regional Office, involved extensive soil sampling and advanced chemical testing. The results not only confirmed gold but also revealed commercially valuable quantities of copper and other metals.
This is not the first time gold traces have been reported in the area. Years ago, signs of gold were detected in the neighbouring Katni district, though those findings lacked sufficient evidence for commercial consideration. The new discovery in Jabalpur strengthens earlier hypotheses about the region’s mineral potential.
Currently, Jabalpur hosts 42 operational mines extracting iron, manganese, laterite, limestone, and silica sand, contributing significantly to India’s mineral exports. The addition of gold could elevate its status in the national mining sector.
Officials say the next step will involve deeper exploratory drilling to determine the reserves’ full scale and economic viability. If confirmed, commercial extraction could begin in the coming years, creating new employment opportunities, boosting state revenue, and potentially enhancing India’s gold reserves.
According to the official, this is a rare opportunity. With responsible planning and sustainable mining practices, the benefits could be transformative for both the local population and the state economy.
As the news spreads, excitement is building in the region, with stakeholders from the mining industry, local administration, and the central government closely monitoring developments. If all goes as projected, Jabalpur could soon find itself glittering at the heart of India’s mining future.
