In an unusual move, a prestigious College in Kolkata has directed its students to submit an affidavit with a declaration that they would not wear ‘indecent’ clothes like torn jeans while coming to the college.

The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College has issued a notice to all the fresh undergraduate students over the dress code. In a notice, the college authorities have strictly prohibited the students from wearing torn jeans and skirts which they termed ‘indecent’.

“Having been admitted to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, I will never enter the college premises wearing torn/artificially torn jeans or any kind of indecent dress. I do hereby affirm that I shall wear normal civil dresses during my study period inside the entire college premises,” the affidavit of the students reads.

Moreover, the parents and guardians of the students have been asked to submit an undertaking. Furthermore, the admission notice on the college website states that students are only allowed to wear formal clothes.

“New 1st SEM classes will start on and from 07.08.2023 ‘Torn jeans are strictly prohibited. Formal clothes are allowed only,” reads the notice on the website.

Although torn jeans have become a trend these days, the prohibition by the college has come as a shocker for many students. Many others, however, were in support of the college’s decision and called for formal clothing inside the college premises.

“Torn clothes do not fit the decorum of an educational institute. Students must follow the rules of the college and know how to dress appropriately for a formal institute,” said the College Principal.
