Shaikha Mahra Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, daughter of Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, stunned the world by giving 'instant divorce' to her husband Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum on Instagram.
On July 16, the princess declared the divorce accusing her husband of infidelity.
Shaikha Mahra Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Instagram post reads, “Dear Husband,” the Dubai princess began. “As you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce." (sic)
The post comes after two months after the couple welcomed their first child.
As per Islamic law, the practice of instant divorce is called 'talaq-e-biddat'. However, traditionally, only husbands can pronounce 'talaq' three times in one sitting to immediately dissolve the marriage. However, the rules for women are different. They can go with the option of 'Khula' where she can request her husband or the court to dissolve the marriage. Meanwhile, in some jurisdictions, women can include a clause in their marriage contract (nikahnama) which grants them the right to pronounce talaq.
However, such an announcement of divorce on social media has stunned netizens.
While many have hailed such a step by the princess and extended support to her in the comments section, others expressed surprise.
One user wrote, "But the divorce will occur from husband's side, right? And wife have to choose 'khula'." (sic)
Another wrote, "I find it empowering when a woman recognizes her worth and confidently stands her ground." (sic)

For the unversed, Sheikha Mahra Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum married Sheikh Mana Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum last year in May. Their daughter was born twelve months later.
