A fiery remark by former Pentagon official Michael Rubin has sparked a wave of online reactions, blending global geopolitics with Indian cricket humour.
In a comment on the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire following New Delhi’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, Rubin took a sarcastic jab at the US President Donald Trump, suggesting he was trying to take undue credit for brokering the truce.
Trump, Ceasefire and Sarcasm
"Donald Trump likes to claim credit for everything. If you ask him, he single-handedly won the World Cup or invented the internet," Rubin quipped. The ex-Pentagon advisor was addressing speculation that Washington had played a key role in mediating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Rubin clarified that while US diplomatic channels often act as a backchannel to avoid escalation during Indo-Pak tensions, it was India’s own military and diplomatic strength that drove Pakistan to back off.
“Pakistan went running to try to achieve a ceasefire like a scared dog with its tail between its legs. There’s no spin the Pakistani military can put on this. They lost very badly,” he said.
India’s Strength Changed Global Narrative
According to Rubin, New Delhi not only won the military confrontation but also succeeded in changing the global narrative. "The focus is now on Pakistan's links to terror. Even Pakistani military officers attending terrorist funerals shows there is no line between the ISI and extremist outfits."
Cricket Meets Geopolitics Online
But what drew Indian netizens’ attention was the quip likening Trump’s credit-claiming habits to those of former India cricket captain MS Dhoni.
One comment read: “Credit stealer mein Trump to Dhoni se kaafi aage nikal gaya.” The comment references a long-standing perception among some Indian cricket fans that Dhoni often overshadowed teammates when praise was due.

Netizens Have the Last Word
The comment thread quickly went viral, with many drawing parallels between public figures who are accused of hogging the limelight, whether on the battlefield or the pitch. "Rubin’s sarcasm nails it, don’t take Trump literally," said another user. “India did the heavy lifting. Trump’s just adding drama as always.”
While Trump’s supporters have not responded officially, the remarks have stirred debate online. For now, the verdict from Indian users is clear: when it comes to stealing credit, Trump just might outscore Dhoni.
