For years, a common belief has existed among students and parents alike that being a college topper with an impressive collection of certificates, medals, and trophies guarantees a bright future. Academic excellence is often seen as the ultimate ticket to success, with many assuming that companies line up to offer jobs or internships to such students. But reality, as it turns out, is quite different.

Recently, the story of Bisma Fareed, a first-year English Honours student at Hansraj College, Delhi University, shook this perception. Despite being a topper and holding over 50 certificates, 10 medals, and numerous trophies, she faced repeated rejections from companies when she applied for internships.

Not toppers, companies want skilled individuals!

In a heartfelt post on LinkedIn that went viral, Bisma shared her realisation. 'Companies were not impressed by her long list of achievements. Instead, they were looking for something else- practical skills'.

She confessed that throughout her academic journey, she had focused mainly on securing high marks and winning awards. However, she overlooked the importance of real-life skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and hands-on experience. This lack of practical exposure became a major roadblock when she stepped into the competitive world of internships and job opportunities.

Why skills matter more than marks

Bisma’s story went viral on social media and resonated with many students and professionals. A few industry experts and working professionals also weighed in. According to them, marks and medals may help reflect discipline and dedication, but what employers truly value is the ability to adapt, collaborate, and solve problems in practical situations.

The bigger message

Bisma’s journey carries a strong message for students everywhere: Academic excellence alone is not enough to guarantee success. While certificates and medals are commendable, they must be complemented with skills like communication, creativity, leadership, and critical thinking.
