Bengaluru, already considered one of India’s most expensive cities, has thrown up yet another cost-of-living shocker. A resident’s post on Reddit went viral after he revealed being slapped with a staggering Rs 15,799 water bill for a two-member household. The bill showed consumption of 165,000 litres, sparking disbelief among netizens.
Resident’s Struggle with Exorbitant Bills
The resident claimed that their landlord charges unusually high BWSSB (Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board) bills every month, often around Rs 10,000. What made the situation more baffling was that the two occupants spend most of their time at work and even face frequent water shortages at home. Frustrated, the resident sought advice from the online community.

Netizens Raise the Alarm
The post triggered an outpouring of reactions. One user remarked, “This bill is impossible. Either air is flowing into the meter or the reading is faulty. A two-person household shouldn’t even cross Rs 300.” Others shared similar experiences of faulty meters that inflated bills until corrected.
Another netizen recounted, “We used to get bills of over Rs 4,000. BWSSB wouldn’t admit fault, but when we turned on the meter only during water supply, the bill dropped to Rs 400–500.” Many advised the resident to immediately visit the BWSSB office and check with neighbours to compare bills.
Public Outrage
Some users labeled the charges as 'straight-up hooliganism,' questioning why the resident had been paying such inflated bills for months. Others bluntly suggested moving out to avoid exploitation.
The viral incident has once again highlighted billing irregularities and accountability issues in Bengaluru’s water supply system leaving many wondering how a basic necessity could end up costing more than rent for some households.
