Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who oversees skill development, entrepreneurship, electronics, and information technology in India, expressed serious concern over a recent case where AI tools were used to morph videos, replacing faces from politicians to celebrities, causing widespread alarm.
In an exclusive interview with India Today, IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar highlighted the rising issue of Deepfakes, emphasising the significant challenge it poses in spreading misinformation.
He acknowledged the government's awareness of the disturbing phenomenon of misinformation, which includes the weaponisation of false information to create misleading narratives.
Chandrasekhar expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for bringing attention to this issue and assured ongoing efforts to regulate misinformation, but he stressed that Deepfake, combining AI with misinformation, is a growing concern for individuals, society, and nations.
Regarding the detection of Deepfakes, Chandrasekhar mentioned the constant innovation in technology, acknowledging that as advancements occur, so do potential harms.
He drew parallels with past instances, such as blockchain and crypto-related crimes, and explained that governments must stay ahead of technological developments to protect citizens.
The Minister expressed confidence in detecting Deepfakes, citing ongoing efforts and the development of startups in India dedicated to this cause.
Chandrasekhar outlined the government's approach to handling violations on internet platforms, including the appointment of a Rule Seven officer to facilitate citizen reports of law violations.
He emphasised the importance of clarity in government expectations from platforms on the Indian internet.
The Minister also mentioned summoning major online platforms, including Google, Facebook, YouTube, and others, on November 24, warning of severe consequences if they fail to remove Deepfakes promptly.
