In 2024, when Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is no more a concept but a part of most of our lives, a major concern floating around is the incoming possible loss of jobs due to the widespread adoption of this technology. However, jobs may not be the worst thing humans could lose, as per experts in the field.
Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist known as the "godfather of AI”, expressed serious concerns about artificial intelligence. In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he warned that AI could lead to human extinction within the next 30 years, estimating an alarming 10% to 20% chance of this occurring.
Noting the rapid advancement of this technology, Hinton likened its development to the industrial revolution but warned that AI could “take control” this time. Moreover, he also added that humans might be like toddlers compared to the intelligence of highly advanced AI systems.
“I like to think of it as: imagine yourself and a three-year-old. We’ll be the three-year-olds,” he said.

The startling comments rattled shockwaves on social media where users expressed their longstanding concerns over AI. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), a user commented “I thought it was coming after my job but no it’s hunting humans!”
Others shared similar apprehensions with “Did anybody ever doubt this won’t happen?” and “We have so many movies to warn but who cares.”

As the pace of AI development continues to accelerate, experts predict that AI systems could become smarter than humans within the next 20 years. Hinton's warnings serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers and the urgent need for regulatory measures to safeguard humanity's future.
