Sending and receiving payments in India is easy and fast, thanks to options like UPI, NEFT, and IMPS.
The Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is now available in several countries including Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bhutan, Oman, Nepal, France, and the UAE.
NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international branch of India's National Payment Corporation, has partnered with other countries to enable QR-based UPI payments in 10 Southeast Asian countries.
If you are travelling to these countries, you can choose not to convert Indian Rupees to the local currency.
Instead, you can use your phone's app to make payments via UPI.
Here's how you can activate international services while travelling:
For example, using the PhonePe payment app:
- Open the UPI app and go to your profile picture.
- Under Payment Settings, select UPI International.
- Click the Activate button next to the bank account you want to use for international UPI payments.
- Enter your UPI PIN to confirm activation.
Similarly, for Google Pay:
- Open the Google Pay app and tap ‘Scan QR code’.
- Scan the international merchant's QR code.
- Enter the amount in the payable foreign currency.
- Select the bank account you want to use for payment.
- A screen appears to activate ‘UPI International’, tap ‘Activate UPI International’.
Note that users can activate international transactions only for bank accounts that support UPI International.
Also, the debit from the bank account is in Indian currency, which means foreign exchange conversion rates and bank fees will apply to transactions.
