As part of the Digital India initiative, the government has expanded its DigiLocker platform, this time with a new feature called DigiLocker Drive.

The service now allows every citizen to securely store personal files, photos, and videos online absolutely free. Much like Google Drive or OneDrive, DigiLocker Drive brings secure and accessible cloud storage under a trusted government platform.

What is DigiLocker Drive?

While DigiLocker is widely known for storing and sharing government-issued documents like Aadhaar, PAN, or driving licenses, the new Drive feature works as a personal cloud. It lets users upload files directly from their phone or computer, create folders, and manage data, all in one secure location.

How to Claim Your Free Storage

Claiming your 1GB free storage is simple:

Visit the DigiLocker website or download the mobile app.

Log in or create a new account.

Click on the ‘Drive’ option (on the website’s left panel or at the bottom in the app).

Start uploading files or create new folders by tapping the “+” icon.

Features and Limitations

DigiLocker Drive lets you e-sign documents, download files anytime, and share them securely. However, storage is limited to 1GB, with no option to expand. It’s designed for storing important documents and references, not as a full backup solution for heavy files like videos.

One key note: files uploaded here are not treated as original government documents. They serve as references but don’t hold legal authenticity like other DigiLocker-verified records.
