A Chinese-made artificial intelligence model, DeepSeek, has shot up to the top of Apple Store's download charts, surprising investors and affecting some tech stocks.
It was released on January 20 and gained popularity among AI enthusiasts before catching the attention of the global tech industry.
According to the creator of DeepSeek-R1, the model was built on less sophisticated and fewer computer chips compared to those used by the leaders of US tech giants. Yet its performance left experts dazed.
US President Donald Trump, who recently unveiled a $500 billion AI initiative led by OpenAI, Oracle, and Japan’s SoftBank, described DeepSeek as a “wake-up call” for the US to prioritize competition in AI development. The launch of DeepSeek has also sparked debates over the US government’s strategy of curbing China’s AI advancements by limiting the export of high-end chips.
When asked about DeepSeek, OpenAI’s ChatGPT responded:
DeepSeek seems to be an AI or search-related tool or technology, possibly specializing in advanced search systems or AI-assisted research. If you'd like, I can look it up for more details.
In terms of competition, it depends on what DeepSeek focuses on. I specialize in conversational AI and providing answers, generating creative content, and assisting with a variety of tasks. If DeepSeek is more focused on search or specialized AI applications, there may be overlap but not necessarily direct competition.
When questioned further about DeepSeek’s potential, ChatGPT added:

When asked if DeepSeek could surpass ChatGPT in usability, ChatGPT responded:
