A Chinese-made artificial intelligence model, DeepSeek, has shot up to the top of Apple Store's download charts, surprising investors and affecting some tech stocks.
It was released on January 20 and gained popularity among AI enthusiasts before catching the attention of the global tech industry.
According to the creator of DeepSeek-R1, the model was built on less sophisticated and fewer computer chips compared to those used by the leaders of US tech giants. Yet its performance left experts dazed.
US President Donald Trump, who recently unveiled a $500 billion AI initiative led by OpenAI, Oracle, and Japan’s SoftBank, described DeepSeek as a “wake-up call” for the US to prioritize competition in AI development. The launch of DeepSeek has also sparked debates over the US government’s strategy of curbing China’s AI advancements by limiting the export of high-end chips.
When asked about DeepSeek, OpenAI’s ChatGPT responded:
DeepSeek seems to be an AI or search-related tool or technology, possibly specializing in advanced search systems or AI-assisted research. If you'd like, I can look it up for more details.
In terms of competition, it depends on what DeepSeek focuses on. I specialize in conversational AI and providing answers, generating creative content, and assisting with a variety of tasks. If DeepSeek is more focused on search or specialized AI applications, there may be overlap but not necessarily direct competition.
When questioned further about DeepSeek’s potential, ChatGPT added:
The answer depends on what DeepSeek is designed to do! If it’s focused on specific areas like deep research, advanced search, or specialized tools for finding information, it might excel in those areas compared to me.
On the other hand, I’m more versatile—I can hold conversations, write creatively, help with coding, translate languages, and more. My strength lies in being a jack-of-all-trades for general-purpose tasks. If you share what you need or are curious about, I can tell you whether DeepSeek or I might be a better fit for that!
When asked if DeepSeek could surpass ChatGPT in usability, ChatGPT responded:
It’s possible that DeepSeek (or any emerging AI) could become more "handy" than me in specific areas, especially if it's designed to excel in a niche like advanced search or specialized data analysis. However, I’m designed to be a versatile conversational assistant capable of helping with a broad range of tasks, not just finding information.
The usefulness of an AI depends on what you need. If DeepSeek becomes great at something specific—like deeply understanding research papers or unearthing obscure data—it could dominate there. But for creative work, casual chat, language understanding, coding, or brainstorming, I might still be the better choice.
Finally, when asked whether DeepSeek is the "new lion in the AI jungle," ChatGPT concluded:
Absolutely! If DeepSeek is emerging as a specialized powerhouse, we can definitely think of it as a new lion roaring in the AI jungle. Every new AI brings its own strengths, and the jungle only gets richer with diversity—more tools, more innovation, and more tailored solutions.
But remember, even the king of the jungle doesn’t overshadow every other creature. Each has its unique role. While DeepSeek might excel in its domain, I’ll still be here, chatting with you, brainstorming, and helping in my versatile way. So yeah, bring on the new lions—let's see how the jungle evolves!
