Shubman Gill’s debut Test series as captain ended in a memorable 2-2 draw against England, and former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar now believes Gill should also be considered for the ODI captaincy. Gavaskar stated that if India is looking to make a change in leadership for the 50-over format, now would be the ideal moment to hand Gill the reins.
Gill’s achievement came on English soil, marking India’s second consecutive 2-2 series draw in England, after the 2021/22 Pataudi Trophy ended in the same result. Throughout the series, Gill appeared to grow as a leader, with his most proactive performance coming in the final Test at The Oval, where he was seen guiding his bowlers and lifting their morale to take wickets.
Gavaskar, one of India’s all-time batting greats, has been vocal about Gill’s potential, suggesting he could replace Rohit Sharma as ODI skipper. Rohit, who hasn’t played for India since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final, has retired from Tests and T20Is but is expected to continue in ODIs. He led India to two ICC titles within a year, from June 2024 to February 2025.
“When the ODI series against Australia or the West Indies begins, that would be the perfect time to bring Gill in, if the selectors decide to make the change,” Gavaskar commented after the final Test.
The legendary opener has also been full of praise for Gill’s batting, highlighting his hunger for big scores and fighting spirit. “He is one of the most admired players in the team. If he isn’t satisfied with a hundred, he goes for a double. If that’s not enough, he aims for a triple. At Edgbaston, he scored 269, showing he never gives up. He wanted to stay there and ensure every run counted,” Gavaskar added.
