Two of Indian cricket’s biggest icons, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, might be inching closer to their ODI swansong, and Australia could be the stage for it. As fans still relish India’s Champions Trophy triumph in March, fresh buzz has emerged that the legendary duo may receive a grand farewell during India’s October ODI tour of Australia. With both players already retired from Tests and T20Is, and whispers of retirement swirling, this could mark the end of an era in Indian cricket.
Australian CEO Drops a Major Hint
Todd Greenberg, CEO of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, sparked speculation by stating:
“This might be the last time we get to see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma play in our country. And if that is the case—who knows—it might not be, but we want to ensure they get the send-off they deserve for their incredible contributions to the game.”
His statement has added fuel to retirement rumours, especially with both Rohit and Kohli having already retired from Test and T20I formats.
Still Eyeing the 2027 World Cup
Despite the buzz, both players have signalled intentions to continue in the ODI format. Rohit Sharma, who will be 40 by the 2027 World Cup, recently said he wishes to play until then. Kohli, too, has not given any indication of stepping away, and his stellar ODI average of 57.9 suggests he remains in top form.
However, in 2019, India won the ODI series on Australian soil under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, which was a significant milestone in Indian cricket history, where MS Dhoni was awarded the Man of the series for his consistent performances with the bat.
The Final Lap—or Not Yet?
Neither has officially announced retirement, but the farewell talk is gaining ground. Whether October marks the end of an era or just another milestone, one thing is certain—if Kohli and Rohit walk out in Australia, the applause will be thunderous, and the emotions, unforgettable.
