The Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night turned into a celebratory ground as India’s cricket great MS Dhoni reminded fans of his iconic six to win the 2011 World Cup. It was the same stadium where the legendary cricketer hit massive six to end India’s World Cup drought after 28 years.
He immortalized the Wankhede Stadium with his massive six to signal India’s triumph by beating Sri Lanka. Thirteen years from that memorable day, MS Dhoni on April 14 once again recreated the iconic moment with three sixes against Mumbai Indians.
Batting against bowling of MI's new captain Hardik Pandya, Dhoni took fans down a memory lane with his three back-to-back sixes. The iconic shots left the entire stadium hooting and cheering. Even MI fans could not stop themselves from celebrating Dhoni’s sixes, displaying the respect MSD has earned over the years.
It was MS Dhoni’s 250th IPL Match and most probably his last at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as speculations are rife that this might be his last season as a player in the cash-rich league. However, there has been no official confirmation in this regard.
On the other hand, despite being hit for three sixes, Pandya himself could not help but give Dhoni a hug.
Talking about the victory, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said, “Our young wicketkeeper batsman scoring that 3 sixes down the order, I think it helped a lot. And at the end, I feel that’s the difference.”
Interestingly, Dhoni scored 20 runs with 3 sixes and 2 runs in just four balls and CSK also won by 20 runs despite Hitman Rohit Sharma’s impressive ton.
