Ahead of the first Test against Pakistan in Perth, Australian batsman Usman Khawaja’s shoes grabbed attention for carrying the messages ‘Freedom is a human right’ and ‘All Lives Are Equal’.
Following the incident, Khawaja found himself at the center of a controversy surrounding his choice of footwear. International Cricket Council (ICC) has prohibited Khawaja from wearing shoes adorned with messages related to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, deeming them political.
However, Khawaja defended his stance and he is determined to challenge the ban, emphasizing his commitment to the principles of freedom and equality.
Khawaja has expressed his perspective on the controversy by posting an emotional video posted on Twitter. The Australian star batsman questioned whether freedom and equal rights were not universal concerns, irrespective of race, religion, or culture.
Moreover, Khawaja asserted that his intention was to give a voice to those who are voiceless, especially the innocent children affected by conflict. He clarified that his message was not political but a reflection of his belief that all lives are equal.
The video has reportedly gone viral on Twitter. It has so far garnered 1.6M views and 28k likes.
