In a surprising development, young Indian batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal has decided to move from Mumbai to Goa for the 2025-26 domestic season. The 23-year-old left-hander’s decision marks another high-profile switch in Indian domestic cricket.
“Yes, it is surprising. He must have thought of something to make such a move. He has requested us to relieve him and we have accepted his request,” an official from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) said.
Limited Ranji Trophy Stint Before Move
Jaiswal last played for Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy Group A match against Jammu and Kashmir from January 23-25, following BCCI’s directive that all India players must participate in domestic cricket when not on national duty. In that match, he managed only 4 and 26 runs, as Mumbai suffered a five-wicket defeat.
Goa Welcomes Jaiswal, Possible Captaincy Role
Jaiswal’s decision to join Goa has been welcomed by the Goa Cricket Association (GCA), with the possibility of him leading the team when available.
“He wants to play for us, and we welcome him. He will be playing for us from the next season,” GCA secretary Shamba Desai confirmed.
On the possibility of Jaiswal captaining Goa, Desai added, “Yes, that can happen. He plays for the Indian team, so he can be the captain, and we will work in that direction. Regarding his availability for domestic tournaments, we are yet to discuss.”
Third Mumbai Cricketer to Shift to Goa
Jaiswal follows in the footsteps of Arjun Tendulkar and Siddhesh Lad, who also moved from Mumbai to Goa ahead of the 2022-23 season. Lad has since returned to Mumbai after serving a cooling-off period, while Tendulkar continues to represent Goa.
Jaiswal’s Rising Test Career
Since making his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2023, Jaiswal has cemented his place as India’s first-choice opener. In 19 Tests, he has maintained an impressive average of over 52, with four centuries and ten fifties to his name. Jaiswal also had an good Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia where he notched up 391 runs with 1 hundred and 2 half centuries.
His switch to Goa is set to add experience and firepower to the state team, while also allowing him to maintain his domestic cricket presence in line with BCCI directives.
