There seems to be no stopping Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The 14-year-old wonderkid is rapidly becoming a household name in Indian cricket circles, and his latest exploits in the Youth Test series against England only further fuel the hype. After dazzling with the bat in the Youth ODIs, Suryavanshi has now etched his name into the history books this time with the ball.
A Record-Breaking Spell
In a landmark moment, Suryavanshi became the youngest player ever to take a wicket in a Youth Test match, achieving the feat at just 14 years and 107 days. He didn’t stop at just one, he scalped the prized wicket of England U19 captain Hamza Shaikh, who had looked dangerous on 84 off 134 balls. Later, he also removed Thomas Rew for 34, ending with impressive figures of 2/35 from 12 overs.
His timely breakthroughs helped India restrict England to 439, giving them a crucial 101-run lead after India posted a mammoth 540 in the first innings, thanks to a captain’s knock from Ayush Mhatre.
Redemption with the Bat
While his first innings with the bat was a rare miss, just 14 runs from 13 balls, Suryavanshi bounced back in style in the second innings. The young left-hander showed incredible temperament and flair, scoring a quickfire 56 off just 44 balls, laced with nine fours and a six. He brought up his half-century in just 39 balls, showcasing the same fearless approach that made him a standout in the ODI series.
His innings gave India crucial momentum in the final innings of the Test and proved that he remains unfazed by setbacks. He was eventually dismissed by Archie Vaughan, son of former England skipper Michael Vaughan, but not before making a statement yet again.
ODI Series Heroics Still Fresh
Suryavanshi had already turned heads in the recently concluded Youth ODI series, where he was the cornerstone of India’s 3-2 series triumph. He smashed a brilliant 143 in the fourth ODI at Worcester and finished the five-match series with a staggering 355 runs, emerging as the standout performer for India.
The innings further cemented his reputation after he earlier became the fastest Indian to score a century in the IPL, adding another layer of credibility to his rapidly growing legacy.
