Records may be made to be broken, but respect must be earned and Shubman Gill has done both. In a remarkable moment of recognition, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar declared that Gill’s 754 runs as captain against England stand taller than his own historic 774-run debut series. Not because of numbers, but because of the character, leadership, and grit behind them.
Gavaskar’s Humble Comparison
Speaking on Sony Sports after Day 3 at The Oval, Gavaskar praised Gill’s exceptional run, calling it more significant than his own 774-run masterclass against the West Indies. “The difference is that Gill had the additional responsibility of captaincy,” he noted. “I was the baby of the team back then, if I failed, nobody would have cared. But Gill? He’s carrying the hopes of a billion as captain.”
Gill Joins Elite Company
Gill’s 754 runs in the five-match series featuring four centuries including a career-best 269, made him only the second captain in Test history to breach the 750-run mark in his debut series, joining the legendary Don Bradman. His performance played a crucial role in India’s comeback, levelling the series in spectacular fashion.
A Touching Tribute
To honour Gill’s milestone, Gavaskar presented the young captain with a special memento, a signed cap and a custom shirt symbolizing the passing of the torch from one generation to the next.
A Star Ascends
Though he fell just 20 runs short of Gavaskar’s long-standing record, Gill’s run-fest under pressure, as leader of the side, has firmly established him as a generational talent and one of the brightest stars in Indian cricket today.
