Sanju Samson’s long-standing association with Rajasthan Royals (RR) appears to be heading towards an uncertain end. The Kerala wicketkeeper-batter, who has been a face of the franchise since 2015 and its captain since 2021, has reportedly developed “serious differences” with RR management.
According to a Cricbuzz report, the fallout has reached a point where Samson has formally requested a trade or release ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Insiders say the tensions escalated during IPL 2025 when Samson missed a few matches due to injury and, surprisingly, stayed away from team meetings even after his recovery.
CSK Interested, But Trade Not Easy
The report also mentions that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have shown interest in acquiring Samson, but there's a catch—CSK is not willing to trade any player in return. Furthermore, under IPL’s retention rules, the decision to trade or release a player lies solely with the franchise, not the player.
Despite clear signs of discomfort—Samson’s family reportedly confirming his desire to leave, and close associates echoing similar sentiments—he remains contractually bound to RR until 2027.
The Road Ahead: Auction or Standoff?
With other franchises keeping an eye on the situation, and CSK considering the auction as the only viable route, Samson’s future hangs in the balance. The standoff could either lead to a high-profile auction bid or further strain within the RR camp.
From being groomed by Rahul Dravid to becoming RR’s captain, Sanju Samson’s journey has been a rollercoaster. But now, with his relationship with the Royals fraying, fans may soon see him donning new colors, if the trade drama finds resolution.
