India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma is back in action, gearing up for his much-anticipated return during the upcoming tour of Australia. On Wednesday, Rohit shared a video of himself batting in the nets in Mumbai, along with pictures of him padding up and running on the ground. With the ODI series set to begin on October 19, the cricketing world is abuzz with excitement about his comeback.

Preparing for a Big Return

In the video, Rohit can be heard saying, “I am here again, it feels really good.” The 38-year-old, who recently retired from both T20Is and Test cricket, is determined to extend his ODI career. While he has expressed a desire to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup, reports suggest that the Australian tour might be his last in India colours.

Stellar Test & ODI Legacy

Rohit bowed out of Test cricket in May, ahead of India’s ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 campaign. From 2013 to 2025, he featured in 67 Tests, amassing 4,301 runs with 12 centuries. As an opener, he flourished between 2019–2024, emerging as India’s top WTC run-getter for a period.

In ODIs, the ‘Hitman’ stands as one of the all-time greats. He has scored 11,168 runs in 273 matches, averaging 48.76 with a strike rate near 93, including 32 centuries. His record in Australia is especially impressive, with 1,328 runs in 30 games at an average above 53, including five centuries.

End of an Era?

The series could also mark the final tour for Virat Kohli, who, like Rohit, has stepped away from T20Is and Tests. If so, India’s tour of Australia might turn into a historic farewell for two modern greats.
