Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are set for face off in the first qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 today in Mullanpur, Punjab.
After an emphatic victory against Mumbai Indians (MI), PBKS secured one of the top two spots on Monday. RCB followed suit, securing their place with a dramatic win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the final league match on Tuesday.
League Ranks and Future Prospects
Both teams concluded the league stage triumphantly, each securing 21 points from 14 matches. However, Punjab Kings claimed the top position due to a superior net run-rate. So, what will happen if rain plays spoilsport in today’s match?
Well, to make things clear, Preity Zinta’s Shreyas Iyer-led PBKS would progress to the final on account of their top league finish. In this scenario, RCB would have to face the winner of the Eliminator between MI and Gujarat Titans for another chance at the final.
However, only time will reveal who will win today’s match, or rain will indeed play spoilsport.
Path to Final Awaits
For Punjab Kings, reaching the playoffs is particularly momentous as this marks their first entry since 2014. The leadership under Captain Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting seems to have rejuvenated the team, overcoming past obstacles in this new era.
RCB's Quest for Glory
On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore are well-versed with the intensity of knockout rounds and are eager to finally capture the elusive IPL trophy. Both teams are acutely aware that reaching this stage is just half the challenge in their pursuit of the title.
