The Neeraj Chopra Classic, a premier event for javelin enthusiasts, is set to take place on 24 May in Bengaluru. This event is expected to attract notable athletes from around the world but will notably miss the participation of Pakistan's Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem, who declined the invitation due to prior training obligations for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships, scheduled from 27 to 31 May. Nadeem is set to leave for training in South Korea on 22 May.

This decision follows a recent attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir—attributed to The Resistance Front, a group linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan—stirring controversy around Chopra's gesture to invite Nadeem. Neeraj Chopra, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, addressed the criticism through social media, clarifying his intentions.

Countering Criticism

Neeraj Chopra explained, 'I am usually a man of few words, but that does not mean I will not speak up against what I think is wrong. Especially when it comes to questioning my love for our country, and the respect and honour of my family.' Chopra highlighted that his invitation to Nadeem was in the spirit of camaraderie and aimed at enhancing the prestige of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, intended to position India as a hub for world-class sporting events.

Timing of Invitation

Chopra pointed out that the invitations were sent before the Pahalgam attack. 'In light of recent events, Arshad’s participation in the NC Classic was no longer feasible. My country and its well-being will always be paramount. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered losses,' he said.
