Who can forget the 2011 Men’s Cricket World Cup when India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets to win the second World Cup after 1983? Under the captainship of everyone’s favourite, Captain Cool MS Dhoni, India defeated Sri Lanka and ended the 28-year wait to lift the World Cup.
Captain Cool was declared the ‘man of the match’ for scoring 91 runs, while Yuvraj Singh was awarded the man of the tournament. Gambhir also scored a brilliant 97 to help India win the match by six wickets in the 49th over.
Meanwhile, former India opener Virender Sehwag has revealed some interesting facts about the historic day. The star batsman recalled each and every moment of the 2011 World Cup-winning moment and revealed a few unknown facts.
Virender has revealed how MS Dhoni only consumed ‘khichdi’ throughout the World Cup campaign due to superstitious beliefs. The former skipper of India believed that it was good fortune and would favour India in the matches.
Interestingly, although Dhoni was going through a lean patch, he stepped up and delivered an unbeaten 91 to lift the World Cup trophy.
“Everyone was having some or the other superstition, and everyone was following theirs. MS Dhoni had a superstition of having ‘khichdi’ all through the World Cup,” Sehwag was quoted as saying to Star Sports.
“He used to say that even if I’m not scoring runs but this superstition is working and we’re winning matches,” he added.
Moreover, veteran Sri Lanka player Muralitharan has revealed that Dhoni’s decision to come ahead of Yuvraj to bat was a game-changing move.
“Yuvi was the best player in the World Cup. I was bowling well, but I was wicketless. I knew Dhoni would come before Yuvraj because he knows how to play me well because I used to bowl in Chennai to him,” the Sri Lanka veteran said.
