Following a long injury lay-off, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has made a comeback to the Indian team for the upcoming Champions Trophy.

However, the comeback to the Indian team was not easy for the speedster. He fought through surgery and extensive rehabilitation to get back on track. Now, after months of hard work and impressive performances in domestic cricket, Shami is hopeful of a consistent show for Team India.

Shami’s discipline during his recovery extended to his diet. Bengali coach Shib Sankar Paul has revealed in a recent interaction that Shami adhered to a strict diet regimen, even avoiding his favorite biryani for two months to keep his fitness level during the injury period.

“Fast bowlers take time to return from injuries. Shami was so hungry to return that he wanted to bowl even after finishing a game. This is great dedication from a sportsman. He even avoided his favorite food- biryani for two months to keep his fitness level,” said Paul.

Reflecting about his injury and comeback to the Indian team, Shami himself revealed that the emotional impact of missing cricket was immense. The thought of wearing the Indian jersey motivated him to stay focused during his rehabilitation.

“Life has been very difficult, that much I can say. Playing for the country is motivation enough. I used to look at the India jersey every day during my rehab,” said Shami.
