The 2011 World Cup was one of the most cherishing moments for Indian fans as the Men in Blue clinched their second World Cup title after 28 years. India went on to defeat Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in front of 90,000 spectators in one of the most iconic finishes in the World Cup.
Yuvraj Singh was named man of the tournament in the World Cup as he played a crucial role for India in the quest to win the World Cup at home. Singh amassed 362 runs with the bat and took 15 wickets in the World Cup 2011. He provided India crucial breakthroughs for India when India was under pressure.
Speaking about Yuvraj Singh, Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin revealed that Yuvi was suffering from a serious illness at that time.“Yuvi used to cough, and he used to cough vehemently. I used to think that it is the pressure of the game and he is coughing it off and he used to cough in the middle. Literally, nobody had any idea, at least from the junior segment of the team that he was suffering from a serious illness,” Ravichandran Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.
“When it broke out, I was shocked because I did not expect somebody who had just become Player of the series, in fact like I would say, ‘Bharat ka Icon’. That literally was it. I think Sachin Tendulkar played an unbelievably big role in that Yuvraj Singh’s World Cup. I call it the Yuvraj Singh’s World Cup because you name it, he was there in that situation in the centre,” Ashwin added.
The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 is beginning today in India with defending champions England taking on New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The World Cup final will also be played at Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19.
