Mahendra Singh Dhoni left an indelible mark on Indian cricket with his more than a decade-long captaincy bringing various laurels to the team. Rather to this day, Dhoni is the sole captain of the Indian cricket team to have won all three white-ball ICC trophies.
From the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, his wins spoke volumes about his man-management and captaincy skills, potentially setting him apart, and making him one of India's finest cricket captains.
Moreover, under his captaincy, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinched five IPL titles and reached ten finals in their first 14 seasons. On a personal note, Dhoni's wicketkeeping records are also impressive, with 829 dismissals and the highest number of stumpings in cricket history.
However, India’s freshly retired veteran spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, once presented a compelling argument for Rohit Sharma.
In a December 2023 YouTube video from his channel, Ashwin highlighted Rohit Sharma's understanding of each player's likes and dislikes, laying an emphasis on his personal approach.

Ashwin noted that although MS Dhoni is widely regarded as the best captain, Rohit's leadership qualities and deep connection with the team make him an outstanding captain."If you take a look at Indian cricket, everybody will be telling you that MS Dhoni is the best captain. (But), Rohit Sharma is an outstanding person, (and) he understands every single player in the team,” the spin maestro was quoted saying.
The comments hold importance now that Ms Dhoni and Ravichandran Ashwin have both retired from international cricket but Rohit Sharma continues to play.

However, Sharma’s poor form was on display in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India lost 1-3 to Australia, leading to widespread buzz about his resignation and an eventual drop from the playing squad in the fifth and final Sydney test.
