Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have endured another season of disappointment, with their hopes of progressing to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs were dashed for the second year running. Although last year they narrowly missed the top four, finishing in fifth place, this year they find themselves languishing at the table's lower echelons with little chance of advancing to the postseason.

Troubled Season for CSK

The campaign commenced promisingly with a victory against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians. However, the early spark did not translate into lasting success. Key batsmen such as Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, and Rahul Tripathi have failed to perform, while the team's dependence on Shivam Dube for crucial runs has been evident.

Much was anticipated with the return of veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni following Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury, but their fortunes have not changed significantly. With only two wins out of the nine matches played, CSK's performance has sparked criticism.

Former Indian international Ajay Jadeja has candidly discussed Chennai's decline over the past two seasons. Reflecting on the disparity between their championship run in 2023 and their recent form, Jadeja said, "Last year's triumph was more emotional, especially as they claimed the title the season before. Emotions can sometimes lead to retaining the same players, yet a downturn was already on the way. I’m both a Chennai and Mumbai fan, like many from our era, admiring Dhoni and Tendulkar."

Recruitment Strategy & Selection Instability

Part of the blame has been directed at CSK's recruitment strategy during the auction. "I'm disappointed. The auction highlighted their lack of firepower compared to other franchises—this has been a critical factor. When strategies falter, losses follow," Jadeja explained.

This season, Chennai's line-up has lacked the usual stability, marked by a series of personnel changes due to underperformance and indifferent batting. Jadeja observed. "Historically, Chennai have been loyal to their players. Look how they stood by Shane Watson even when struggling. Yet this year, the changes have been numerous. Devon Conway played just three matches before being benched; Rachin too is now out. This uncertainty likely traces back to the auction choices."
