In what comes as big news for Royal Challengers Bangalore fans, IPL Run machine Virat Kohli may return as captain of RCB in the upcoming edition of IPL 2025.
Kohli, who is the only cricketer yet to play for another team, has always shown his love for RCB and his fans at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Meanwhile, RCB are unlikely to retain 40-year-old Du Plessis who led Saint Lucia Kings to their maiden Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title in the previous edition.
“We did have a conversation about the future. For now, looking at the past few seasons and upcoming auctions, we need to build our team. There is no surety over who will lead the team. However, if required, we may ask Virat to do the honours. It depends on the auction and the players we rope in. A call will be taken on captaincy only after the auction and not before,'' a close source of RCB told Sports Tak.
Kohli relinquished captaincy in IPL 2021. The 35-year-old has featured in 143 matches for RCB with a win percentage of 46.15. Kohli, who holds the orange cap, has been one of the most consistent performers playing in the Indian Premier League.
Who RCB May Retain for IPL 2025?
As the IPL Retention Deadline ends on October 31, Virat Kohli and Mohammed Siraj are set to be among the top retentions for the southern franchise.
In the uncapped category, left-arm pacer Yash Dayal is likely to be retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The RCB management may also look to retain players like Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar, Indian pace bowler Akash Deep and others via Right to Match (RTM) card in the mega auction.
Kohli, who had previously led the team from 2013 to 2021, took his team to the final in 2016 where they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
