In what comes a major boost for 5-time IPL Champions Chennai Super Kings, BCCI is likely to put former Indian captain MS Dhoni in the category of uncapped players when it announces the player retentions ahead of the mega auction for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
According to Times of India, BCCI is likely to bring back the old retention rule which was introduced in the inaugural edition of IPL 2008 but was never used. Eventually, it was scrapped in 2021. The old rule says players who have been retired for more than 5 years need to be put in the uncapped category.
As per the old retention policy, an uncapped player would cost an IPL franchise an amount of just Rs 4 crore.
‘’I have no idea about it, We have not requested for it. BCCI have told that ‘uncapped player rule’ may be kept, that’s all. The BCCI haven’t announced anything as yet. The Rules and Regulations will be announced by the BCCI.’’ CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told TOI.
THALA scored 161 runs at a strike rate of 220.54 in the last edition of the IPL who arrived to bat only at the death overs. He had a average of 53.
‘’Right now the ball is not in our court, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call but needs to be best interest of the team.’’ Dhoni said during a promotional event.
If all goes well, the return of the old retention rule will bring happiness to the faces of Indian fans who are eyeing to watch MS Dhoni in action for one more year in 2025.
