Riding on all-round performances by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, India put up a dominating display to register an emphatic win by an innings and 132 runs against Australia at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Saturday.

With the resounding victory, the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the four-match Border-Gavaskar series. Now, fans are eager to know where does the victory put India in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table?

After the convincing victory against the visitors, India have consolidated their chances of making it to the WTC final. Their present point for the all-important final is of 61.67 per cent. India are now at the second position and they are well ahead of third-placed Sri Lanka (53.33).

Heading into the series, India stood at the second place with 58.93% points. India are yet to confirm their place in the WTC final for the second successive time. Last year runners-up India have to win at least two of the remaining three matches of the Border-Gavaskar series to book their berth in the all-important WTC final.

On the other hand, Australia remain on top of the WTC points table. The visitors need only a win to confirm their place in the WTC final. However, their WTC points have decreased from 75.56 per cent to 70.83 after the first Test loss against India.

Australians are known for their fighting spirit. Several cricketers are of the opinion that the visitors will come back strongly and give India a tough challenge in the second Test.
