India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah faces crucial decisions as the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy heads into its final two Tests. Former India captain Anil Kumble has urged Bumrah to push himself and play both the upcoming matches in Manchester and London, emphasizing the importance of his presence after India’s narrow loss at Lord’s. Meanwhile, managing Bumrah’s workload remains a key concern for team management, especially with a packed schedule ahead.
Kumble’s Call: Play Now, Rest Later
When the squad was announced for the England tour, it was clear Bumrah’s participation would be limited to three or four Tests due to workload management. Bumrah himself had targeted just three matches, prioritizing fitness over captaincy responsibilities. Even after India’s win at Birmingham without Bumrah, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed no change in the plan. However, Kumble has suggested a bolder approach. Speaking to JioHotstar, he said, “If I’m part of that group, I would push Bumrah to play the next two Tests. His presence is crucial. If he sits out and India loses, the series is over. He can rest during the home series afterward.”
A Demanding Schedule Ahead
The fourth Test begins on July 23 in Manchester, with the final Test at The Oval starting just eight days later on July 31. Bumrah’s fitness will be tested, especially after his back injury during the Border–Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year sidelined him in a critical match. Following England, India hosts West Indies in October and South Africa in November, making workload management vital.
What Lies Ahead?
As the series nears its climax, India must decide whether to balance Bumrah’s fitness or rely on his match-winning skills in the final two Tests. His performance could well decide the fate of the series, making this a defining moment for India’s bowling attack.
