In the game of cricket, where Sachin Tendulkar is called the God of Cricket, this man from South Africa is called the God of Fielding. He can fly like a bird and can take one-handed blinders which seem impossible for others to replicate.
Jonty Rhodes is undoubtedly called the greatest fielder to ever grace the game. On his 55th birthday, let’s know some interesting insights about Rhodes.
Jonty Rhodes hogged the limelight during the 1992 Cricket World Cup where he ran out Pakistan Batsman Inzamam Ul-Haq with an extraordinary fielding effort from the backward point.
Rhodes was also known as the rubber man who would save runs by stretching full length which was hardly done before. During his playing days, he was more agile and flexible than any other fielder.
During a match, Jonty was declared 'Man of Match' for his fielding efforts. He took 5 catches against West Indies which was played in Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in 1993.
After batting first, South Africa managed just 180 runs on the board.
During the second innings when West Indies was well on the verge of a win, Jonty Rhodes produced something that was beyond imaginable. He became South Africa’s saviour by taking 5 catches with his sheer brilliance on the field.
South Africa won that match and Jonty Rhodes was declared Man of the Match for his fielding. He had also contributed 40 crucial runs with the bat.
Rhodes had a special connection with India and named his daughter ‘India’ when she was born in Mumbai in 2015.
Currently, he is the fielding coach of Lucknow Super Giants in IPL.
