In a revelation that has stirred the IPL world, Moeen Ali, former Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder, disclosed that Virat Kohli came dangerously close to being sacked as RCB captain in 2019. Speaking to SportsTak, Moeen claimed that veteran Parthiv Patel was seriously considered to lead the team during Gary Kirsten’s tenure as head coach.

Parthiv Patel — The Almost Captain

“Yes, I think he was. I’m quite sure he was,” Moeen said when asked about Parthiv’s potential captaincy.

“In the final year when Gary Kirsten was there, Parthiv was in line to become captain. He had a brilliant cricketing brain. That was the talk at the time. I don’t know why it didn’t materialise, but it was seriously considered.”

Patel, known for his tactical acumen, had been a steady presence in the RCB camp but never captained in the IPL before retiring in 2019.

Kohli’s Captaincy Under Fire

Kohli, who took over RCB captaincy full-time in 2013, led the team through highs and lows. While the 2016 final was a career highlight, back-to-back underwhelming seasons — finishing last in 2017 and 2019 and sixth in 2018 — put his leadership under scrutiny.

A Resurgence and a Legacy Secured

RCB bounced back in 2020, and though Kohli stepped down in 2021, he continued to be a pillar of strength. Under Rajat Patidar’s captaincy, RCB finally lifted their maiden IPL title in 2025, with Kohli scoring 657 runs in 15 matches and mentoring the young skipper throughout.

Parthiv Patel, meanwhile, transitioned smoothly to a mentorship role with Gujarat Titans, continuing to shape the future of Indian T20 talent.
