The Delhi Capitals began their IPL 2025 campaign in roaring form, winning five matches in a row and emerging as early title contenders. But as the tournament enters its business end, their momentum has stalled. With back-to-back poor batting displays and a string of underwhelming performances, Delhi now faces mounting questions and former India cricketer Aakash Chopra is leading the criticism, particularly targeting KL Rahul for going “off the boil.”
DC’s Bright Start Turns Dim
During the initial weeks of IPL 2025, Delhi Capitals looked like a well-oiled machine. Their batting order was clicking, and KL Rahul, their marquee signing, was in sublime form, scoring 381 runs in 10 matches and anchoring key victories. However, as pressure intensified, Rahul’s form has dipped dramatically, contributing to DC’s current slump.
In the last three games, Rahul has struggled, registering scores of 7 against KKR, a sluggish 39-ball 41 against RCB, and 10 off 14 balls in a rain-hit match against SRH. Delhi managed only 133 in that outing, and were lucky to escape with one point due to rain.
Chopra Points Finger at Rahul and Team’s Batting Woes
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra didn’t mince words about DC’s batting struggles. “Your batting is not firing,” he said. “KL Rahul has gone off the boil at the wrong time. The team has lost faith in Jake Fraser-McGurk. Faf du Plessis and Karun Nair haven’t shown consistency. You can’t rely on part-time performances.”
Chopra added that Abishek Porel has shown glimpses, but hasn't sustained it. He also questioned the use of players like Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, Tristan Stubbs, and Axar Patel in key roles, suggesting that DC's over-reliance on punts has backfired.
No Replacement for Harry Brook Raises Eyebrows
Another sore point for Delhi Capitals is the unresolved absence of England star Harry Brook. After Brook withdrew from the IPL in March, DC has yet to name a replacement. Chopra expressed disbelief over the delay.
“Where is your replacement for Brook? They haven't taken one, and won’t get it if they don’t act in the next two days. That story has ended for them,” Chopra remarked.
The Road Ahead for Delhi Capitals
With just three league games left against PBKS, GT, and MI, Delhi Capitals must bounce back quickly to keep their playoff hopes alive. Their top order needs to regain form, and the management must address selection and strategy concerns swiftly.
As fans look ahead with cautious optimism, DC's next games will decide whether their campaign ends in disappointment or turns around in time for the playoffs.
