As Indian cricket enthusiasts celebrate Shubman Gill’s stellar performance and leadership during the tour of England, some have taken a deeper dive into assessing his potential—as both a batter and a captain—and the areas he can still improve. Gill amassed an impressive 754 runs on the tour, shattering multiple records and playing a crucial role in India securing a 2-2 series draw.

Speaking about his captaincy, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar offered some thoughtful reflections.

“All in all, a fantastic result. 2-2—it could’ve gone differently, but there are no ifs and buts in cricket,” Tendulkar remarked.

He elaborated on the challenges of leadership, saying, “Captaincy often hinges on how well the bowlers are performing—how disciplined they are, and how consistently they stick to their plans. When things don't go their way, bowlers sometimes start to experiment, which puts pressure on the captain. He starts to feel that the fielders he has aren’t enough, because runs are leaking from all directions.

“Gill remained calm and composed, but during big partnerships, it gets tough for any captain. The focus shifts to containing the flow of runs.”

While Tendulkar acknowledged that some of Gill’s decisions as captain could have been different, he was largely impressed with the way Gill handled the pressure and managed the team.

“Overall, I felt he had good control over the team. Sure, there were moments that might’ve been handled differently—but that’s always the case, and everyone has their own perspective. This was his first series as captain, and it came against arguably the most aggressive Test side in the world. No other team plays the way this England side does,” Tendulkar concluded.
