Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has expressed that the presence of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the One Day International (ODI) setup remains crucial, as their vast experience can play a key role in guiding and mentoring the younger generation of Indian cricketers.
At present, the future of these two modern-day greats in international cricket is uncertain. Since announcing their retirement from Test cricket, neither Kohli nor Rohit has featured in any international fixture. However, Raina believes that their return, particularly in the ODI format, could significantly benefit the team’s balance and confidence.
According to Raina, the value of Rohit and Kohli’s experience cannot be overstated. He pointed out that seasoned campaigners like them are essential for helping emerging talents, such as Shubman Gill, grow and perform under pressure. “Rohit and Virat’s experience is important. They can guide the young players. Shubman Gill needs players like Virat and Rohit,” Raina said during a recent interaction.
He also reminded that both Rohit and Kohli boast impressive track records — having been part of India’s Champions Trophy and World Cup triumphs. Kohli has also tasted success in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In Raina’s opinion, such achievements and the leadership qualities they possess make them invaluable assets in the dressing room. Speculation is already swirling that both senior players might make a comeback to international cricket during the ODI series in Australia later this year.
In addition to his comments about the veteran duo, Raina praised pacer Mohammed Siraj for his remarkable performances during the recent Test series against England. Highlighting Siraj’s consistency and stamina, Raina noted, “Siraj should play all the formats of the game. He bowled 187 overs in the England Test series,” underlining the bowler’s work ethic and ability to adapt across formats.
