After winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025, India is now a strong force to reckoned with in the white ball cricket.
Veteran cricketer Rohit Sharma has already retired from T20Is and he is expected to announce his retirement from ODI cricket as well. Meanwhile, the search for Rohit's successor as white-ball captain is a key challenge facing Indian cricket.
Fans & Experts Surprised
Several fans and experts were surprised following Suryakumar Yadav‘s appointment as T20I captain. It was expected that explosive all-rounder Hardik Pandya would be handed over the all-important role. Shubman Gill currently serves as vice-captain for the ODI team.

In response, the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian captain Kapil Dev believes that Pandya should captain India in both ODI and T20I formats.
Kapil has endorsed Pandya to lead the Men in Blue in both white-ball formats, despite mixed reviews of his leadership. While Hardik found early success with Gujarat Titans in the IPL, his current tenure with Mumbai Indians has faced flak.
Kapil also supports format-specific captains, citing Hardik’s limited red-ball involvement in recent years. According to the former great, India should consider appointing separate captains for different cricket formats.
