Neither of the players has won the prestigious award in their careers and would like to leave their mark in the history of the game by winning it.

In case Messi, Mbappe or any other player gets tied at the same number of goals, the player with the least number of penalties will be awarded the Golden Boot.

While Messi has converted three penalties--one each against Netherlands, Croatia and Saudi Arabia so far, all of Mbappe’s goals are from the outfield.

In case Messi scores and Mbappe does not, Messi will be taking the prestigious award by automatic choice.

Moreover, if Messi and Mbappe will be tied in the number of penalties and outfield goals, the coveted award will go to the player with the most assists.
