BGT Test 5: Jasprit Bumrah goes off-field, may miss remaining innings

Jasprit Bumrah left the field during BGT's fifth test for medical treatment, sparking concerns. Virat Kohli steps in as captain amid developments.

In the latest twist to India’s ongoing power show at the fifth test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) on Saturday, team captain and bowling maestro Jaspit Bumrah was spotted leaving the field and then the sheds, reportedly for medical treatment.

Visuals from the match proceedings first captured Bumrah walking off the field. A while later he emerged out of the sheds in his training kit and out of his team uniform, Soon after, he was spotted stepping into an emergency medical car, with initial reports stating him being taken to a hospital for scans, for injury suffered during the last spell of his bowling.

The captain-bowler left the field after bowling just one over at the start of the session and did not return since. As of now, it is unlikely for Bumrah to play the remainder of the innings and if his injury is severe enough, he may not play for the entirety of the fifth BGT test.

Meanwhile, on the field, Virat Kohli assumed charge as the stand-in captain even as Rohit Sharma watched on from the dressing room after being rested for this match.

Jasprit Bumrah’s injury scare comes as a major blow for Team India, who are currently involved in a do-or-die match against Australia to keep their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship alive.

Incidentally, after taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, Bumrah displayed an aggressive stance, and subsequently India’s bowling attack came to the rescue of a poor batting line-up. At the time of filing of this report, Australia is chasing India’s 185 at the loss of 7 wickets during the 2nd innings of Day 2 of Test 5 at Sydney.
