The Barabati stadium in Cuttack may host a T20 international match between India and South Africa in June, said Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) Secretary Sanjay Behera on Friday.

According to Behera, already preliminary discussion for hosting the T20 match at Barabati has been held with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

“We are planning to organise the upcoming T20 match between India and South Africa in June. We have held talks with the BCCI president in this regard,” said Behera.

The announcement has brought smiles back on the faces of cricket enthusiasts in Odisha after they were left disappointed with the shifting of the India-West Indies T20 out of Cuttack.

“We had earlier planned to conduct the T20 match between India and West Indies. But BCCI had dropped Barabati Stadium in Cuttack from the list of venues after announcing changes in the schedule for the upcoming West Indies Tour of India.

As per the revised timetable, the three ODIs will now be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad and three T20Is will be held at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

A senior official said that the decision of limiting the series to two venues instead of six as originally announced was done to mitigate bio-security risks by cutting down on travel and movement of the teams and others.
