Though several experts and fans have expressed their dissatisfaction over premier leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s exclusion from the Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, former captain Sourav Ganguly has defended the selectors’ decision.
The former southpaw was satisfied with the selectors preferring spinning all-rounder Axar Patel over Chahal for the continental tournament.
“They have picked Axar ahead of Chahal because of his batting. So I think it’s a good selection. Chahal can still come back if someone gets injured. This is a 17-member squad, two, in any case, will have to move out,” said Ganguly during an event.
Moreover, the former captain also justified KL Rahul’s selection into the squad despite having niggles.
“Rahul is fit, not injured anymore,” Ganguly added.
Talking about the upcoming ODI World Cup to be played in India, Ganguly said that the onus is on the premier batters to finally bring the title back home.
“You cannot win World Cups all the time, there will be bad times, there will be gaps. The main batters have to bat very well. If they bat well they will win. The World Cup is different, Asia Cup is different and the Australia home series is different. Every tournament depends on how they play that particular moment. India are a strong side. However, they have to play well during the World Cup,” said Ganguly.
