Former Team India skipper and legendry cricketer MS Dhoni has recently revealed how he once tricked Bangladesh cricketers into gathering information about their on-field strategies.
In a recent event in Kolkata, Dhoni revealed that he could understand Bengali because of his time in Kharagpur where he was posted as a Ticket Collector. He spent a considerable amount of time in West Bengal and played several club level tournaments. Due to this reason, he understands Bengali pretty well.
The Captain Cool recalled how he tricked Bangladesh players by pretending that he did not understand Bengali, though he clearly understands the language.
“Kharagpur me mere railways ka job tha aur us samay mera Bengali bahut achhi thi. Ab bolunga toh bhulbhal bolunga, kisko kya kharaab laag jayega (When I used to work at Kharagpur in Railways, my Bengali was very well. Now if I speak, I may commit mistakes),” Dhoni said in the event.
As per Dhoni, he used to speak Bengali but has forgotten how to speak, but understands the language pretty well.
The former India captain said that during a match against Bangladesh, the keeper was instructing the bowlers in Bengali and he could understand all of that and played accordingly.
It was only after the match the Bangladeshi players could know that Dhoni understood Bengali, and they were surprised.
“E to Bangla bujhte paare (He understands Bengali!),” the Bangladeshi players screamed in astonishment.
Dhoni retired in India colours after the 2019 ICC World Cup. However, the Captain Cool is still leading Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). CSK won the IPL title in 2023. The 42-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman will play in the upcoming edition of the mega event.
