Son of sarpanch candidate killed, 8 arrested

Berhampur: A youth, the son of a candidate for sarpanch`s post in Ganjam district, was killed allegedly by supporters of another candidate, the police said. Police arrested atleast eight persons including the main accused in connection with the attack.

A day after the third phase panchayat polling was held in the area, Lalu Gouda (25), son of Pramila Gouda of Diha Padhala gram panchayat was attacked with sharp weapons by a group of people. He succumbed to injuries on way to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, the sources said. In retaliation, a group of people went on rampage and set a fire some houses and a rice mill stated to be belonging to supporters of Gouda`s political rival.

The group also staged a road blockade in the village disrupting communication between Bhanjanagar and Dasapalla. Senior police officers, including Ganjam SP Rajesh Pandit went to the spot. At least eight persons, including prime accused Kulu Swain, a supporter of BJD, were arrested, sources said. Security force was deployed in the village where the situation was tense but under control, they said. This was the second poll-related casualty in the district in the ongoing panchayat elections. A BJD supporter Congress Nayak was killed by his political opponents on February 5 at Haripur under Dharakote police station.
