Sarpanch caught while accepting bribe in Rourkela

Rourkela: The sarpanch of Talsara Gram Panchayat, Jemarani Pradhan, in Sundargarh district was on Thursday caught red handed by the state vigilance squad while taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a beneficiary for clearing his file for payment, vigilance sources said.

Pradhan did not clear the file of one Md Maksood, who had completed earth work on a village pond. She demanded Rs 5,000 to clear the amount for payment in his favour.

As Maksood had not paid, the sarpanch started harassing him. Maksood then agreed to pay the bribe and informed the vigilance, which laid a trap.

Pradhan was caught red handed while accepting the first instalment of the bribe, Rs 3,000 from Maksood in his chamber today, the sources said.

The sarpanch has been arrested and will be produced before the vigilance court at Sambalpur, he said.
