Rourkela: A local judicial court on Wednesday convicted a man and sentenced him to seven years rigorous imprisonment for raping a girl in 2009.

Assistant Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kailash Chandra Swain held Upendra Parida (30) guilty of raping a girl in Kalunga area, near here, in January 2009 with a promise to marry her.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Parida, who will have to face additional jail term of six months in the event of failure to pay the fine.

According to prosecution, Parida, an employee of a Kalunga based Sponge Iron Factory had physical relation with the girl and had also promised to marry her, but he subsequently refused to marry her.

The girl then filed a complaint against Parida in Brahmunitarang Police station and Parida was booked under rape case on May 7, 2009.
