Puri:  A municipal councillor, who was also priest at historic Sri Jagannath Temple here, was on Wednesday gunned down by some unidentified men.

Police said `Guna Sinhari` alias Talachhu Bhagaban Mohapatra, 38, a councillor from ward number one of Puri Municipality, was fired at by miscreants as he came down the street near a youth club this evening.

Besides being a member of the Temple Managing Committee, Mohapatra was also Secretary of Pushpalak Nijog, a leading priest association in the Puri temple.

Gajapati Maharaj Dibya Singh Deb and Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) Arabinda Padhee who is also the chief administrator of the temple, condoled Mohapatra`s death.

"We are yet to ascertain the motive behind the gunning down of Mohapatra who was fired from point blank range," Puri SP Anup Kumar Sahu said.
