Mumbai: A Police Sub-Inspector was on Tuesday arrested on charges of cheating and extortion, whereas two Constables are being questioned for their suspected role in the case.

Sub-Inspector Prashant Mane, attached with Sewree police station, allegedly posed as a Crime Branch officer and extorted money, police said. "Prashant Mane, attached with Sewree police station, has been arrested, while two Constables from the same police station were being questioned," said Senior Inspector Vinayak Kakade of the Dindoshi police station.

According to police, on August 23, Mane, along with five others, barged into the residence of one Mohammed Hashim Sheikh (48) in suburban Malad posing as Crime Branch officials. They took away ornaments worth over Rs 18 lakh and Rs 5 lakh in cash, saying it was unaccounted money. Sheikh had brought the cash after selling his ancestral property in Bihar, police said.

Doubting the claims made by Mane and five others that they were from Crime Branch, Sheikh approached the Dindoshi police station. Meanwhile, Crime Branch, which conducted a parallel inquiry, arrested three persons, Gaibul Hassan Khan (36), Abdul Sheikh (34) and complainant`s nephew Salman Khan.

Khan told the police he knew about the cash and valuables lying at his uncle`s home. "Khan came up with the idea of cheating his uncle and told one of his friends, Irfan, believed to be a police informer, that his uncle had kept hawala money at his house," said a police officer. Irfan told Mane about the cash and ornaments at Sheikh`s house. "We questioned Mane and arrested him while two Constables are being questioned," he said.
