Women in Odisha will now receive an insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh under the Union government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme, informed Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Wednesday.

The announcement underscores the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access for women. The coverage will be linked to the e-KYC database ensuring seamless issuance of insurance cards.

This initiative will be in effect from February and is a pillar of the government’s healthcare strategy. A central team has been actively engaging with the State government to streamline the implementation process. To date, the government has collated data for one crore families, aiming for expansive reach.

Under the scheme, which merges the Gopabandu Jana Arogya and Ayushman Bharat programmes, men will receive coverage of Rs 5 lakh, while women are eligible for Rs 10 lakh.

These enhanced benefits will be accessible in approximately 30,000 hospitals across the nation, boosting healthcare facilities significantly.

This initiative not only reflects a significant policy direction but also marks a step towards gender equity in healthcare provision.

“Ayushman Bharat is a national scheme. From the very beginning, I am emphasizing that IT integration is pretty necessary. We will gradually manage the technical issues and women will receive an insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh under the scheme. Earlier, only 956 hospitals were included under the old card. Now, 30,000 hospitals will be integrated. Hence the credibility of the hospitals and the facilities there will be considered. However, it’s not a big issue in the 21st century and it will be integrated soon,” said Mahaling.
